Electricity rates steady as oil prices rise
Electricity rates in Antigua and Barbuda will remain stable for now. This comes despite rising global oil prices.
According to Utilities Minister Melford Nicholas, costs are being managed. He said the Antigua Public Utilities Authority is absorbing increases. Therefore, consumers will not feel the impact yet.
Meanwhile, global energy markets remain volatile. However, APUA has chosen not to pass on costs. As a result, prices will stay steady in the short term.
Still, Nicholas issued a clear warning. He said the situation could change quickly. For example, a sharp rise in oil prices would create pressure. If oil reaches extreme levels, costs may increase.
Nevertheless, the current plan will continue for now. APUA intends to hold the line a while longer. This approach reflects past action during COVID-19. At that time, the government and APUA worked together. They aimed to shield consumers from economic shocks.
In addition, Nicholas said both sides remain aligned. Their goal is to limit inflation impacts. Therefore, households receive temporary relief.
Looking ahead, the focus shifts to renewable energy. Nicholas described this as the long-term solution. Plans include upgrades near V.C. Bird International Airport. Another facility is planned near Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
These projects will strengthen energy resilience. They will also add battery storage to the grid. As a result, the country can reduce fuel dependence.
Furthermore, the government targets up to 50 megawatts of solar power. This goal spans the next three to four years. Consequently, fuel costs should decline over time.
Nicholas also pointed to Barbuda as an example. Its hybrid system already saves about 25 percent in fuel. Therefore, similar systems in Antigua could save millions.
Currently, electricity costs remain high. Prices average about US$0.42 per unit. In contrast, oil-producing countries pay far less.
These high costs affect many sectors. For instance, water production and infrastructure face pressure. However, new projects aim to reduce expenses. A new health facility will use renewable energy.
In conclusion, Nicholas expressed confidence in the strategy. Reducing fossil fuel use will stabilize prices. It will also boost the economy and support the environment.
