Electoral Commission issues media rules for St. Philip by-election
Electoral Commission has issued media guidelines ahead of the St. Philip by-election scheduled for March 16, 2026.
The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission released the rules to guide media coverage and political advertising during the campaign period.
Officials say the guidelines aim to ensure fairness. Moreover, they seek to give political parties and candidates equal access to media platforms.
The rules fall under the Representation of the People Act. Therefore, all media organizations must follow the requirements.
According to the commission, radio and television stations must allow candidates to promote their campaigns. In addition, stations must not prevent any political party or nominated candidate from broadcasting campaign material.
The commission also addressed print media coverage. Newspapers and other outlets must not block or refuse campaign material that promotes candidates.
Furthermore, media organizations must not alter or distort submitted campaign content. Instead, they must broadcast or publish the material as it is provided.
The guidelines also regulate advertising costs. Radio and television stations must charge no more than their normal hourly advertising rate for campaign content.
Consequently, candidates can access airtime at fair and affordable prices during the election period.
The commission warned that violations will carry serious penalties. Any radio station, television station, or print media outlet that breaks the rules commits an offence.
Additionally, individual staff members who breach the guidelines may also face consequences.
Officials said courts may impose strong penalties on offenders. Those found guilty on summary conviction could face a fine of up to $10,000.
In some cases, the court may also order imprisonment for up to one year. Authorities may apply both penalties depending on the circumstances.
The commission emphasized the importance of fair and balanced election coverage. Therefore, media organizations must follow the rules throughout the campaign period.
The upcoming by-election will determine representation for the St. Philip constituency. Voters will head to the polls on March 16, 2026.
Consequently, the commission wants to ensure a fair and transparent campaign environment.
Ultimately, the new guidelines aim to protect equal access to media for all candidates contesting the seat.
