Doctors Warn of Deadly Risks From Prescription Hopping

Doctors

DOCTORS in Antigua and Barbuda warn the public about the growing, dangerous practice of prescription hopping. In fact, patients visit multiple doctors and pharmacies to get the same medications at once.

Dr Courtney Lewis, Vice President of the Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda, says the practice is more common than most people realize. Moreover, patient freedom can become risky when misused.

“If I give you a prescription today, you pick it up at one pharmacy, then visit another doctor and pharmacy, you end up taking all the meds together,” Dr Lewis said. Consequently, this can cause serious health problems.

He explains that doctors may unknowingly prescribe more medications to patients already on several drugs. Furthermore, repeated visits distort medical histories, making new diagnoses appear more accurate than they truly are.

Dr Lewis also warns patients often bypass pharmacy checks. For example, they fill the same prescription at different pharmacies to avoid detection. Antibiotics and painkillers are the most abused medications.

“Many patients think antibiotics cure all,” he said. “Painkiller misuse also grows over time, requiring stronger doses for relief.”

Dr Alafea Stevens, President of the Medical Association, praises pharmacists for their critical role. In addition, she notes pharmacists often spot multiple fills or altered prescriptions and prevent harm.

She stresses that doctors and pharmacists must communicate closely. Otherwise, dangerous patterns may go unnoticed. People of all ages can fall into this habit, sometimes without realizing the risks.

Dr Stevens warns that prolonged unsupervised use can cause organ damage. Therefore, patients should stick with one doctor, share all medications, and consult their pharmacist before starting new treatments.

“Long-term misuse of these drugs harms your health,” she said. “Legal penalties also apply to those who break prescription laws.”

Overall, authorities urge caution, honesty with healthcare providers, and responsible medication use to prevent life-threatening consequences.
