Doctor Jailed 30 Years for Criticizing Maduro
Doctor Marggie Orozco, 65, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison by a Venezuelan court after criticizing President Nicolás Maduro’s government in a WhatsApp audio message, according to local and international rights groups.
The court convicted her of treason, incitement to hatred, and conspiracy, imposing the maximum sentence. The case stemmed from community leaders reporting Orozco for sending what they perceived as a disloyal message. The contents of the audio message or its intended recipient have not been disclosed, leaving the public in the dark about what specifically triggered the harsh punishment.
Orozco was arrested in San Juan de Colón in August 2024, amid a tense period following Maduro’s disputed reelection. His victory was widely criticized by opposition parties and dozens of nations, who dismissed the election results as fraudulent. The aftermath of the election saw large-scale protests, leading to 2,400 arrests, though most detainees were released within months.
During this period, Maduro encouraged supporters to report individuals he labeled as “fascists,” a term frequently applied to opposition members and critics. Rights groups argue that this created an environment of fear, making ordinary citizens vulnerable to accusations for expressing dissent.
Since her detention, Orozco has suffered two heart attacks, highlighting concerns about her health and the conditions inside Venezuelan prisons. The NGO Foro Penal reports that approximately 882 individuals are currently held as political prisoners across Venezuela, underscoring the ongoing crackdown on opposition voices.
International observers and human rights organizations have condemned the ruling, describing it as a severe violation of freedom of expression. Many warn that cases like Orozco’s send a chilling message to anyone daring to voice criticism of the government.
This case has drawn global attention, emphasizing the risks faced by journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens under Maduro’s administration. Advocates are calling for international pressure to secure her release and to reform Venezuela’s justice system, ensuring that citizens are not punished for speaking out against political leaders.
