DISCLOSURE: New Party Urges Transparency on US Deportation Deal
DISCLOSURE: Antigua and Barbuda’s newest political party is calling for clarity. The Antigua and Barbuda National Congress, ABNC, wants full disclosure. The request concerns an agreement with the United States on deportees.
The first week of 2026 has been turbulent for the nation. On the first day, the Prime Minister urged unity. He asked citizens to rise above division and misinformation. However, that message was quickly tested.
Soon after, the Prime Minister publicly discredited his Foreign Affairs Minister. Additionally, the government failed to clearly explain arrangements for accepting third-country nationals from the United States. Moreover, the Prime Minister sparked criticism for harsh language on social media.
On the same day, the Prime Minister described the nation as confident and prosperous. He also called Antigua and Barbuda globally admired. However, those claims faced challenges within days.
Recently, the United States imposed new visa restrictions. Furthermore, some citizens must now pay bonds between US$5,000 and US$15,000. As a result, public concern has grown rapidly.
Although commentators have analyzed strained US relations, ABNC says the government response is weak. Moreover, the party notes ongoing disregard for Opposition members in Parliament. Consequently, public trust in governance continues to erode.
According to ABNC, frustration and national unease are rising. Therefore, many citizens feel less hopeful and less confident. The party argues that current leadership has damaged the country’s reputation.
ABNC believes Prime Minister Gaston Browne bears primary responsibility. The party says his actions harm diplomatic relations. Additionally, strained ties with the Foreign Affairs Minister raise further concerns. Legal issues linked to US interests also complicate matters.
Nevertheless, ABNC acknowledges regional challenges. Caribbean nations face limited bargaining power globally. However, the party says this does not excuse silence. Open dialogue remains essential on major national issues.
For these reasons, ABNC supports full disclosure of the Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement concerns accepting third-country nationals removed from the United States. Furthermore, the party urges temporary suspension if needed.
ABNC also calls for a non-partisan review. This review should include the Opposition Leader. Independent MPs, senators, NGOs, churches, and community leaders should participate.
Ultimately, ABNC says the people deserve transparency. The party urges wisdom and cooperation during uncertain times. It says restoring democracy and international respect must remain a priority.
