Denmark gets Support as Canada and France Open Consulates in Greenland

Canada and France have opened new diplomatic consulates in Nuuk, Greenland, in a move seen as a show of support for Denmark and Greenland’s self-governing status. The consulates were officially opened on February 6, 2026, as global interest in the Arctic continues to grow.

Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand attended the opening of the Canadian consulate, alongside Governor General Mary Simon. Canadian officials said the new mission will strengthen cooperation with Greenland on climate change, Arctic security, Indigenous issues, and regional development.

France also opened a consulate in Nuuk, becoming the first European Union country to establish a permanent diplomatic presence in Greenland. France’s newly appointed consul said the mission will focus on expanding cultural, scientific, political, and economic cooperation with Greenlandic authorities.

The diplomatic openings come amid increased international attention on Greenland’s strategic importance. Observers say the move signals clear backing for Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory while reinforcing closer partnerships with Greenland on shared Arctic challenges.
