Day after election to be public holiday, PM announces
Day after the April 30 general election will be observed as a public holiday, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced. He spoke to thousands of supporters at the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) campaign launch at People’s Place.
Moreover, Browne confirmed that Nomination Day is set for April 13. The announcement followed the official start of the ABLP’s re-election campaign.
In addition, the public holiday is expected to mark a celebratory moment, reflecting what Browne anticipates as a party victory.
Furthermore, he highlighted the country’s transformation since the ABLP took office in 2014. “We have moved from struggle to strength,” he said.
Browne noted economic recovery after significant job losses before 2014. He emphasized that the government restored employment and promoted sustained growth.
In addition, the Prime Minister pointed to measures easing the cost of living. These include removing personal income tax, reducing ABST on essential goods, and expanding food assistance programs.
He also referenced subsidies on fuel and utilities. Consequently, the state absorbed rising global costs to prevent price increases for consumers.
On infrastructure, Browne highlighted ongoing roadworks, expanded water production, and housing initiatives supporting thousands of homeowners. These efforts, he said, show focus on tangible improvements in people’s daily lives.
Moreover, the ABLP has invested in education and healthcare. This includes expanded access to tertiary education and better medical services across the country.
In addition, Browne urged voters to prepare for April 30. He reminded citizens to renew voter identification cards before polling day.
The Prime Minister concluded by stressing the party’s commitment to delivery and stability. The ABLP, in office since 2014, seeks a fourth consecutive term as campaigning intensifies.
Finally, Browne encouraged all eligible voters to participate actively. He said the public holiday will allow citizens to celebrate the democratic process while supporting their communities.
