Colombia mourns as plane crash kills lawmaker, 14 others
Colombia woke to tragedy after a small passenger plane crashed in the northeast.
Colombia confirmed that rescuers found no survivors at the crash site.
The aircraft carried 15 people, including two crew members.
Among them was Congressman Diógenes Quintero, officials said.
The Civil Aeronautics Authority confirmed the deaths on Wednesday.
Soon after, the news spread across the country.
The plane belonged to state airline Satena.
It flew from Cúcuta to Ocaña in Norte de Santander.
According to officials, the aircraft took off at 11:42 a.m. ET.
However, it lost contact with air traffic control minutes later.
Flight data shows the signal vanished nine minutes after takeoff.
As a result, authorities launched an immediate search.
Meanwhile, Quintero’s team reported losing contact with him.
They last detected his phone signal at Camilo Daza airport.
That signal appeared shortly before the flight departed.
After that, all communication stopped.
Later, search teams located the wreckage in a rural area.
The site sits near La Playa de Belén, officials confirmed.
Multiple aircraft joined the search effort.
Eventually, responders reached the crash zone.
Sadly, they found no survivors at the scene.
Therefore, authorities shifted focus to recovery efforts.
Quintero served in Colombia’s Congress since 2022.
Notably, he represented the special peace constituencies.
Those seats represent victims of decades of armed conflict.
They emerged from the 2016 peace accord with FARC rebels.
His political party praised his dedication and leadership.
It described him as deeply committed to public service.
“He worked tirelessly for his region,” the party said.
Moreover, it highlighted his sense of responsibility.
Transportation Minister María Fernanda Rojas addressed the crash earlier.
She said the plane lost contact shortly after takeoff.
Satena reported the flight should have landed around 12:05 p.m.
Instead, the journey ended in disaster.
Following the crash, local leaders expressed deep sorrow.
The Norte de Santander governor’s office issued a statement.
“We deeply regret this tragedy,” the statement said.
It also offered condolences to families and loved ones.
Now, investigators work to determine the cause.
Meanwhile, Colombia mourns the loss of 15 lives.
