China executes 11 members of gang who ran billion-dollar criminal empire in Myanmar

China

China executed 11 members of the notorious Ming family criminal gang.
They ran mafia-like scam centers in Myanmar and killed workers who tried to escape.

The Ming family formed one of the “four families” of northern Myanmar.
They operated hundreds of compounds involved in internet fraud, prostitution, and drug production.

Moreover, gang members held positions in local government and militia aligned with Myanmar’s junta.
In September, authorities sentenced 11 gang members to death for homicide, illegal detention, and fraud.

Two defendants appealed, but the Supreme People’s Court upheld the verdict.
The gang’s leader, Ming Xuechang, later killed himself in custody.

Additionally, his son, Ming Guoping, and granddaughter, Ming Zhenzhen, faced execution.
The family ran Crouching Tiger Villa in Kokang, employing 10,000 people for scams and criminal acts.

Furthermore, Kokang’s capital, Laukkaing, became a hub of multibillion-dollar online fraud.
Trafficked workers had to scam strangers with sophisticated online schemes.

After years of complaints, Beijing launched a crackdown in 2023.
Authorities issued arrest warrants and offered $14,000 to $70,000 rewards for capturing gang members.

The Ming family conspired with Wu Hongming, who authorities also executed.
Together, they killed, injured, and illegally detained workers, resulting in 14 Chinese deaths.

For instance, in October 2023, four people died when gang members opened fire at a scam compound.
The shooting occurred as they moved workers under armed guard after receiving a police tip.

Scamming gangs in Southeast Asia steal over $43 billion annually, USIP reports.
In Myanmar, corruption and lawlessness allowed these compounds to flourish.

Meanwhile, civil war and border instability helped gangs expand their operations.
China’s foreign ministry said Beijing will intensify efforts to “eradicate the scourge of gambling and fraud.”

The executions mark the end of a major criminal empire.
Authorities hope this sends a clear warning to other gangs in the region.
