Chantel family waits for answers nine months after child’s death
Chantel Crump’s parents are spending another Christmas waiting for answers. Nine months after her death, they say the truth remains out of reach.
The family says investigators still rely on overseas forensic testing. As a result, clarity on how the nine-year-old died remains delayed.
According to relatives, police now hold the results of a second autopsy. However, authorities will not release the findings until the next court hearing.
That hearing is expected in February. Meanwhile, requests by the parents for early access were denied.
Because of this, the family describes the wait as painful and exhausting. They say the uncertainty has made grieving even harder.
Initially, local pathologists could not determine a cause of death. The first post-mortem was ruled inconclusive.
Therefore, investigators sent key samples abroad. These included toxicology and other forensic evidence.
Weeks later, officials ordered further testing. Early examinations found no clear signs of strangulation or drowning.
Additionally, doctors found no visible injuries or evidence of sexual assault. This lack of findings deepened the mystery.
Chantel was a Grade Four student at Five Islands Primary School. She was taken from near her home in Grace Farm on March 12, 2025.
More than 48 hours later, searchers found her body in bushes at Weather Hills. The discovery shocked the nation.
Soon after, police charged 20-year-old Angela Mejia with murder. She has appeared in court twice since her arrest.
Despite those proceedings, key questions remain unanswered. The family says they still do not know what truly happened.
Although Chantel was laid to rest in June, closure has not followed. Instead, the waiting has continued.
Meanwhile, the case has left a lasting impact on the wider community. Many residents still call for transparency and timely updates.
Supporters say the family deserves clear answers. They also urge authorities to complete the investigation swiftly.
For now, the parents say they will keep waiting. They hope the next court date finally brings truth.
Until then, they continue to mourn while searching for justice for their daughter.
