CARICOM Criticized for Response to US Strikes
CARICOM, the Caribbean regional organization, has come under fire for its weak response to recent US military strikes in Caribbean waters. The strikes are part of efforts by the US to stop drug trafficking from Latin America. CARICOM stated that the Caribbean should remain a zone of peace, but critics say its reaction lacks strength and impact.
An independent defense expert, Dr. Sanjay Badri-Maharaj, said CARICOM has a history of not handling security issues well. He noted that during the 1983 US military operation in Grenada, CARICOM’s response was ineffective. He also pointed out that some member countries act in their own interest rather than supporting the regional body.
Trinidad and Tobago, for example, supports the US actions. The country wants to protect its economic interests and control the flow of Venezuelan migrants entering its borders. According to Dr. Badri-Maharaj, Trinidad and Tobago’s stance is shaped by these priorities, which shows how national interests often outweigh regional unity.
The criticism of CARICOM raises questions about its future role in regional security. Many believe the organization must find stronger ways to speak and act together to keep the Caribbean safe and peaceful.
