Cabinet Centralizes Work Permit Approvals to Protect Local Jobs
Cabinet has decided to take a direct role in approving work permits. The move aims to protect local jobs.
Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office, explained the decision Thursday. He spoke at a post-Cabinet press briefing.
Merchant said the change responds to concerns about foreign labor. The government wants qualified Antiguans and Barbudans to fill available positions first.
Previously, the Ministry of Labour handled work permit decisions. The Minister received recommendations from department staff.
However, Cabinet noted that some positions locals could fill were going to expatriates. Therefore, ministers decided to increase oversight.
Merchant explained that additional eyes will help ensure locals do not get pushed aside. Cabinet will monitor approvals closely.
Attorney General and Minister of Labour, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, supports the move. He believes Cabinet involvement may also speed up some approvals.
Some suggested simply instructing the Labour Department. However, Merchant clarified that Cabinet wants a centralized approach. Ministers understand all aspects of the economy.
They also know where locals can contribute effectively. Cabinet believes this insight makes the approval process fairer and more efficient.
Furthermore, the strategy ensures that Antigua and Barbuda’s economic growth benefits its citizens. Officials hope broad-based opportunity will follow.
Merchant stressed that this approach preserves the country’s competitive edge in the global leisure economy. He also noted that it supports upcoming major events.
One example is CHOGM in November, which will bring international attention. Ensuring locals access these opportunities is a priority.
Cabinet intends to strengthen the work permit system as part of a broader national agenda. Officials want growth and high-profile engagements to benefit citizens.
In conclusion, centralized oversight is designed to protect jobs, streamline approvals, and maximize local participation in the expanding economy.
The government believes this approach balances economic growth with national workforce development. It signals a commitment to fairness and local prosperity.
