Cabinet Approves Island-Wide CCTV System at 43 Key Locations

Cabinet has approved a new CCTV surveillance system across Antigua and Barbuda to strengthen national security.

Officials stated that the initiative will enhance public safety and support law enforcement operations. Moreover, it will help prevent crimes before they occur.

Currently, all equipment has already shipped. It will arrive within 30 days. Then, authorities will begin installation immediately. They expect full deployment within two months.

The government identified 43 strategic locations for high-definition cameras. These include major public spaces, commercial areas, and critical tourist corridors. For example, cameras will cover Fort James and Bay Street to monitor residents and visitors alike.

The Cabinet emphasized that these cameras will deter crime effectively. In addition, officers can detect incidents quickly and respond faster. Real-time monitoring will help police maintain public order and safety.

Furthermore, the system will target petty crimes, such as muggings, theft, and vandalism. On busy tourist days, authorities will increase police patrols to complement the cameras. This dual approach ensures visitors feel safe while supporting Antigua and Barbuda’s reputation as a secure destination.

Cabinet members also highlighted that this project forms part of a broader national security strategy. It focuses on modernizing law enforcement capabilities, protecting livelihoods, and enhancing community well-being.

Moreover, the initiative supports sustainable tourism development. Safer streets encourage more tourism and business investment. Residents will also enjoy safer public spaces.

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda will operate the system, increasing its ability to respond promptly. Combining technology with more active patrols allows police to prevent crime rather than only react to it.

Finally, Cabinet assured the public that the CCTV system aligns with national growth goals. It will foster economic development, boost community confidence, and strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s overall security.

Overall, residents and visitors can expect safer streets and improved law enforcement thanks to this major security upgrade.
