Browne Says Ghanaian Nurses Will Strengthen Health System Amid U.S.-Cuba Pressure
Browne announced that Antigua and Barbuda is recruiting over 100 nurses from Ghana.
He said the move aims to protect the public health system.
He emphasized that the Ghanaian nurses will not replace Cuban medical personnel.
Instead, the goal is to diversify staffing and reduce risk.
Furthermore, Browne noted that increasing U.S. pressure on Cuba could affect Caribbean nations.
He warned that sanctions might force Cuban nurses to withdraw.
As a result, Antigua and Barbuda could face vulnerabilities.
Throughout 2025, the United States warned that countries hosting Cuban medical programs might face sanctions.
These sanctions would apply unless compensation arrangements were reformed.
Antigua and Barbuda adjusted its payment structures to comply.
However, Browne said uncertainty about U.S. actions remains.
Meanwhile, the opposition United Progressive Party criticized the government’s handling of the issue.
They called the staffing changes abrupt.
They also thanked Cuba for decades of medical assistance.
The party highlighted programs from former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer.
These included an eye-care initiative and scholarship access.
They expressed concern about potential disruptions to these programs.
Browne responded by assuring that Cuban doctors and nurses are not being phased out.
He described partnerships with Havana and Accra as short- to medium-term measures.
The government intends to expand local capacity during this period.
Moreover, Browne said the ultimate goal is to rely fully on locally trained health workers within two years.
He added that Antigua and Barbuda maintains friendly relations with Cuba.
He confirmed that safeguards are in place to meet international labor standards for all foreign medical staff.
“Our responsibility is to safeguard healthcare for the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” Browne said.
He explained that building a fully domestic workforce ensures long-term resilience.
The measures are designed to protect the health system amid global political shifts.
In conclusion, Browne emphasized that recruiting Ghanaian nurses complements existing Cuban staff.
He said the plan strengthens the system while preparing for potential international challenges.
The government remains committed to maintaining high-quality health services for all residents.
