BREAKING: Long-serving UPP member Desmond Charles resigns
Long-serving UPP member Desmond Charles has resigned from the party. His decision is effective immediately.
Charles joined the United Progressive Party in 1992. He supported the party since 1990. Back then, the UPP promoted sacrifice, respect, love, and teamwork. He even gave up a candidacy in St. George to support Jacqui Quinn-Leandro, helping her become the first female MP.
However, he said today’s UPP is very different. He cited self-centeredness and disrespect for long-standing members. Furthermore, he criticized the party’s lack of strategic focus and inability to engage with opposing views.
Charles also expressed concern over divisive conduct. He mentioned UPP Chairperson Gisele Isaac, noting her behavior reflects broader leadership problems. Moreover, he held the Political Leader, Jamale Pringle, responsible for ongoing failures. According to Charles, Pringle has not matured into his role or guided the party positively.
He said the party no longer prioritizes effective leadership. Once proud of the slogan “Leadership Matters!,” the UPP now tolerates weak leadership. In addition, he highlighted polling that showed Prime Minister Gaston Browne leading Pringle by more than 4 to 1 in public trust.
Charles emphasized his principle: never put party over country. He explained that his resignation reflects a belief that the UPP no longer serves Antigua and Barbuda’s best interests.
Despite leaving, he expressed gratitude. Charles acknowledged friendships and experiences gained during his decades with the party. Nevertheless, he said he can no longer associate with a party that has lost its direction.
Finally, he closed by reaffirming his commitment to national interest. Charles made clear that his resignation stems from principle and conviction, not personal conflict. He urged reflection on leadership and the party’s future.
This departure marks a significant moment for the UPP as it faces internal challenges and questions about its path forward. Leadership, Charles suggested, will determine the party’s relevance in upcoming elections.
