Barbados Nears Elimination of Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission

Barbados is on track to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The island has made remarkable progress through strong public health initiatives, early testing, and access to antiretroviral treatment for pregnant women.

Health officials credit the success to years of collaboration between government agencies, healthcare professionals, and international partners, which have ensured consistent care and education for expectant mothers. The WHO noted that Barbados’ approach could serve as a model for other Caribbean nations aiming to achieve similar milestones in HIV prevention.

If certified, Barbados would join a small group of countries that have successfully halted HIV transmission between mothers and their babies — a significant victory for regional health advancement.
