Barbados Elevates Breadfruit to National Superfood Status
Barbados has officially elevated breadfruit to national “superfood” status as part of a new push to strengthen food security and expand agricultural exports. The announcement was made on February 5, 2026, during the opening of the Hope Agricultural Training Institute in St Lucy.
Prime Minister Mia Mottley said the initiative aims to transform breadfruit from a traditional backyard crop into a commercially valuable product. More than 100 acres have already been prepared for expanded production, with plans to increase cultivation and encourage young people to enter the agricultural sector.
Breadfruit, once viewed by some as a low-value food, is now being positioned as a nutritious and climate-resilient crop with export potential. Barbados is already shipping thousands of kilograms of breadfruit each week to markets in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, according to officials.
