Backyard Gardeners Begin Plant2Plate Competition with Seedling Collection
Backyard gardeners gathered at the Agricultural Extension Division (AED) office on Valley Road on January 15. They came to collect seedlings for the Plant2Plate Competition. This marked the start of the crop-growing phase of the national backyard gardening initiative.
The distribution began at 9 a.m. and included attendance by Anthony Smith Jr., Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy. Permanent Secretary Walter Christopher was also present. Officials noted that the strong turnout reflected continued government support for community agriculture and household food production.
Gardeners queued to receive seedlings. This signals the launch of their individual plots and confirms participation in the competition. Organizers said the programme encourages residents to convert home spaces into productive gardens. They added that the initiative promotes healthier eating, greater self-reliance, and sustainable farming practices.
The AED coordinated the distribution. Officials provided guidance to help participants establish and maintain their crops. They described the process as smooth and efficient. Consequently, participants left prepared to begin planting immediately.
Seedlings distributed included beet, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, lettuce, thyme, chive, celery, kale, arugula, eggplant, and Chinese cabbage. Organizers emphasized that variety helps gardeners develop both skills and healthy produce for their families.
The seedling handout represents an early milestone in the Plant2Plate Competition. The initiative aims to strengthen food security by empowering citizens to grow fresh produce at home across Antigua and Barbuda. Furthermore, organizers highlighted that the competition fosters a sense of community while promoting sustainable, nutritious living.
Officials encouraged participants to carefully monitor their crops and share best practices. They stressed that consistent care and attention are key to success. The competition will continue over several weeks, with progress updates and eventual judging to recognize the most successful backyard gardens.
Overall, the Plant2Plate Competition represents a practical step toward building self-reliant households, supporting national food security, and cultivating a culture of healthy eating throughout Antigua and Barbuda.
