A 13 year old boy from Australia is being hailed as a hero after swimming for 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to shore to raise the alarm after he got into difficulties on Friday with his mother Joanne Appelbee, 47, brother Beau, 12, and sister Grace, 8. The family was caught in strong currents while enjoying time near the water, leaving them stranded and struggling to stay afloat.

Realising the danger, the boy made the difficult decision to swim back toward shore on his own. Battling exhaustion, waves, and powerful currents, he continued for hours until he reached safety and alerted rescuers.

Emergency crews were then able to locate and rescue his mother and siblings, who were found clinging together in the water. Authorities said the boy’s quick thinking and determination played a critical role in saving their lives.

The story has drawn widespread admiration, with many praising the child’s courage, strength, and presence of mind under extreme pressure.
