At Least 15 Dead, 19 Injured in Guatemala Bus Crash
At least 15 people died and 19 were injured after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in western Guatemala.
Authorities reported the accident occurred on Saturday along the Inter-American Highway in the Sololá Department, between kilometers 172 and 174. The area often experiences dense fog, which reduces visibility for drivers.
Leandro Amado, a local firefighter spokesperson, said the victims included 11 men, three women, and one minor. Meanwhile, emergency crews transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Firefighters shared social media images showing the bus wreck in the ravine. Rescue teams quickly reached and pulled victims from the vehicle.
Police and firefighters coordinated on-site to control traffic and help with evacuations. The steep terrain and fog made the rescue operation difficult.
Witnesses said the bus lost control while navigating the foggy road. Authorities continue investigating whether driver error, mechanical failure, or road conditions caused the crash.
In addition, traffic officials urged drivers to slow down in fog-prone areas. They warned that sudden weather changes could increase accident risks.
Medical teams treated passengers for broken bones, head injuries, and other trauma. Hospitals stayed on alert for any worsening conditions.
Meanwhile, authorities offered condolences to the families of the deceased and promised support to the injured. They stressed the importance of strict safety measures along the highway.
This tragedy underscores the dangers of traveling through mountainous regions in Guatemala. Authorities continue warning drivers to exercise caution, especially in foggy conditions.
