APUA Staff Ordered Back to Work After Emergency Talks

APUA

APUA staff will return to work Tuesday (March 10th) after emergency talks with government officials and union leaders.

The meeting followed industrial action earlier in the day by some employees of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority.

Soon after the disruption, Melford Nicholas stepped in to address the situation. He currently serves as Minister responsible for Public Utilities.

As a result, he called an urgent meeting with key stakeholders. The discussions aimed to resolve concerns raised by workers.

Several representatives attended the meeting. These included leaders from the Antigua Trades and Labour Union. Union executives and shop stewards also joined the talks.

In addition, members of APUA’s executive management team attended the meeting. Together, they discussed the issues that led to the industrial action.

Earlier in the day, some workers withdrew their labour. The employees are covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement between APUA and the union.

Therefore, the meeting focused on addressing concerns linked to that agreement. Officials also sought to restore normal operations quickly.

According to APUA, the talks remained calm and productive. Both sides exchanged views during what officials called a constructive discussion.

At the same time, participants clarified several concerns raised by employees. This helped both sides better understand the issues.

Moreover, union leaders and management reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue. They agreed that cooperation remains important moving forward.

Following the discussions, union representatives spoke with their members. Soon after, employees received instructions to return to work.

Workers were then asked to resume their normal duties. This decision aims to restore essential services across the country.

APUA provides several critical services throughout Antigua and Barbuda. These include electricity and water services that residents depend on daily.

Therefore, officials stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted operations. Reliable utilities remain vital for homes and businesses.

Meanwhile, both sides agreed that more discussions are necessary. As a result, they scheduled a follow-up meeting.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 11. During that session, officials hope to finalize outstanding matters.

In the meantime, APUA says it remains committed to open communication. The organization also pledged to work closely with employee representatives.

Ultimately, both sides aim to find solutions through continued dialogue. Officials say cooperation will help prevent future disruptions while protecting essential services.
