APUA Responds to Surge in Ruptured Water Lines Across Antigua
APUA says reports of ruptured water lines are rising across the island. Officials link this to ageing infrastructure and higher water production.
In a statement on Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, the Water Business Unit acknowledged the increase in leaks. They noted that parts of the distribution network were not built for today’s higher water volumes.
Moreover, older pipes combined with increased system pressure have caused more frequent breaks. As a result, some areas experience repeated disruptions.
To address the problem, APUA is carrying out phased upgrades to mainlines. Specifically, sections are being replaced with stronger high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes. This effort is part of a broader plan to modernize and strengthen the water network.
Meanwhile, response teams are deployed daily to repair leaks and fix other faults. They work around the clock to minimize customer disruption.
Customers experiencing issues are encouraged to call the APUA Contact Centre at 211. The centre operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Furthermore, the authority emphasizes patience as repairs and upgrades continue. By improving infrastructure, APUA aims to reduce leaks and provide more reliable service over time.
In addition, officials remind residents to report any water line problems immediately. Quick reporting helps crews respond faster and prevents further damage.
Overall, the surge in ruptures highlights the need for continued investment in water infrastructure. Through ongoing upgrades, APUA seeks to ensure safe and consistent water delivery for all residents.
Finally, the authority urges public cooperation. By staying informed and reporting leaks, communities play an active role in improving the water system.
