Antiguan students in Cuba seek help amid crisis
Antiguan and Barbudan students in Cuba are appealing for assistance. They face rising costs and worsening living conditions.
About 77 students from Antigua and Barbuda currently study in Cuba. Many depend on small stipends that no longer cover basic needs.
Students report soaring food, housing, and transportation prices. In addition, prolonged power outages and fuel shortages make life harder.
One medical student described the experience as “pretty rough.” The student said uncertainty about the situation adds to stress.
“Personally, the experience has been really rough,” the student said. “We see videos and articles, but no clear information.”
Transportation costs have jumped sharply. Fares that once cost 100 Cuban pesos now range between 800 and 1,000 pesos.
Meanwhile, monthly rent has increased from $40–$100 to $200–$400. Food prices have also risen dramatically.
Eggs now cost about 3,000 pesos, up from 1,500 pesos. Cooking oil has increased from 900 to 1,300 pesos.
Fuel shortages have disrupted public transport, worsening daily struggles. Consequently, students must find alternate ways to travel to school.
Despite the challenges, many students remain committed to finishing their studies. They stress leaving now would mean abandoning years of work.
Cuban Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda Sergio Gonzalez praised their resilience.
“I am glad that they decide to continue there, despite the difficulties,” Gonzalez said. He also noted that Antiguan students perform well academically.
He added that many Antiguan and Barbudan students rank among the top in their classes.
The Antigua and Barbuda government is monitoring the situation closely. Officials are engaging CARICOM for regional support and safety measures.
Authorities say safety protocols are in place in case conditions worsen. Meanwhile, students rely on each other for support.
They continue studying under difficult circumstances, hoping their sacrifices lead to better opportunities.
In the meantime, students call for financial assistance and guidance. Support from the government and community could ease hardships.
Ultimately, these students demonstrate resilience and determination, striving to complete their education despite Cuba’s deepening economic crisis.
