Antigua welcomes Sunrise Airways non-stop flights from Santo Domingo

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda officials welcomed a new non-stop flight service from Santo Domingo this week.

The service comes from Sunrise Airways and strengthens travel links across the Caribbean. Moreover, tourism leaders say the route will improve regional connectivity.

Officials held a welcome ceremony on March 3 at V.C. Bird International Airport. During the event, leaders celebrated the arrival of the inaugural flight.

Tourism and Aviation Minister Charles Fernandez addressed guests at the ceremony. He praised the airline for expanding its network to Antigua and Barbuda.

According to Fernandez, the new route supports stronger regional integration. In addition, it helps boost tourism and business travel.

The minister also highlighted recent airport improvements. The government recently invested about US$50 million in upgrades at V.C. Bird International Airport. Therefore, officials believe the airport can support more international traffic.

Fernandez also emphasized Antigua and Barbuda’s strategic location in the Caribbean. Because of its central position, the country often serves as a regional gateway.

Furthermore, travelers can now easily connect to Barbuda. The island recently opened its own international airport. As a result, visitors can explore both islands more easily.

The tourism minister also noted the large Dominican community living in Antigua and Barbuda. Approximately 14,000 residents have Dominican roots. Therefore, the new flight offers an important travel link for families and businesses.

Meanwhile, Sunrise Airways welcomed the partnership with Antigua and Barbuda. Eastern Caribbean Representative Colin Piper spoke about the airline’s regional strategy.

He explained that Antigua plays a key role in the company’s expanding network. Since 2024, Sunrise Airways has focused on strengthening Eastern Caribbean connections.

According to Piper, the new service also strengthens the airline’s Santo Domingo hub. Consequently, travelers will gain easier access to other destinations across the Americas.

He also stressed that improved air travel supports regional economies. For example, stronger airlift encourages tourism, trade, and business investment.

Additionally, it helps improve supply chains across Caribbean markets.

Airport Authority Acting CEO Philmore Andrew also welcomed the airline’s investment. He said the new route reflects confidence in Antigua and Barbuda’s aviation sector.

Furthermore, he expects the service to support continued growth at V.C. Bird International Airport.

The new route will operate twice each week. Flights will run on Tuesdays and Saturdays between Santo Domingo and Antigua.

Sunrise Airways will use Embraer ERJ140 regional jets for the service. Each aircraft carries up to 30 passengers in a single cabin class.

To celebrate the launch, the airline introduced a promotional fare of US$199 one way.

Officials believe the new service will strengthen travel, tourism, and regional cooperation.
