Antigua Urges Trump to Reduce Military Tension
Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne has written to former U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to help de-escalate rising military activity in the Caribbean as tensions between Washington and Venezuela continue to grow.
In his letter, Browne called for renewed diplomatic engagement, stressing that open dialogue remains the only realistic path to preventing conflict in waters shared with Caribbean nations. He reminded Trump that the region has long embraced the principle of a Zone of Peace, working tirelessly to maintain stability in a world becoming increasingly unpredictable.
Browne warned that even small signs of military confrontation can send shockwaves through Caribbean economies. Because tourism remains the backbone of many islands, he explained that “a hint of armed confrontation” instantly affects hotel bookings, flight activity, foreign investment, and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of families. Any build-up of military presence, he said, risks casting “a long shadow” over an industry vital to development.
He encouraged Trump to “follow your instincts,” noting that the former president has often voiced support for negotiation over conflict. Browne highlighted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s stated willingness to engage in direct dialogue, arguing that diplomacy — while sometimes slow — always “delivers fewer sorrows than the alternatives.”
Antigua and Barbuda, Browne wrote, stands fully prepared to support international efforts that lower tensions and create space for meaningful negotiation. The nation’s only aim, he emphasized, is to protect regional peace and preserve the Caribbean as “your near-shore neighbour and long-standing friend.”
The prime minister ended his letter by affirming his government’s respect for the United States and the historic friendship shared between both nations. He reiterated that Antigua and Barbuda views the U.S. as a partner and “a force for good,” urging all leaders involved to choose diplomacy over confrontation.
According to the government, Antigua and Barbuda will continue engaging regional and global partners to promote peace, security, and long-term stability throughout the Caribbean.
