Antigua Set to Launch National Health Insurance in 2026
Antigua and Barbuda is set to expand its healthcare system in 2026. The government plans to transition the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) into a full National Health Insurance (NHI) program. This move was announced in the 2026 Speech from the Throne.
The NHI will cover more diseases and will be recognized throughout CARICOM. As a result, residents can expect wider access to quality care and better financial protection.
In addition, several new health initiatives will strengthen the system. A mental health facility is being built in Seaview Farm. Furthermore, a new dialysis center will serve up to 100 patients daily. The government will also add an operating theatre for future kidney transplants.
SLBMC’s transplant program will expand. Already, it has completed 11 successful operations. Consequently, patients will have access to life-saving procedures closer to home.
Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams praised the Minister of Health for “outstanding leadership” during this transformation. Moreover, he said these efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to public well-being.
Officials confirmed that digital health records and a streamlined insurance process will make services more efficient. In addition, outreach campaigns will help residents enroll in the NHI program easily.
The government emphasizes that preventive care will be a key focus. For instance, early disease detection programs will reduce long-term healthcare costs. Additionally, ongoing staff training ensures medical personnel meet high standards of patient care.
Ultimately, the NHI program and health infrastructure investments aim to create a stronger, more resilient healthcare system. Furthermore, these initiatives align with global trends toward universal health coverage.
Residents can expect these programs to roll out throughout 2026. Meanwhile, authorities encourage public engagement and awareness. With these steps, Antigua and Barbuda is positioning itself as a regional leader in healthcare development.
