Antigua Set to Expand Rent-to-Own Housing to Bolans and Barbuda

Antigua

Antigua will expand rent-to-own housing, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced on his weekly show.

He said the government will build 50 condominium units in Bolans and 50 at Louis Hill in Barbuda.

Residents can apply monthly rent toward ownership, giving them a clear path to their own homes.

Browne said the plan expands the Booby Alley housing project approved by cabinet.

“In Bolans, we’ll build 50 units like Booby Alley,” he said. “Barbuda at Louis Hill will also get 50 homes.”

The Booby Alley project in Pointe should be mostly complete by June. Officials plan to hand over units by August.

China funds the EC$50 million project, which is part of a larger EC$100 million urban renewal plan.

The initiative replaces old wooden structures with 150 new condominium-style units in one of the capital’s poorest neighborhoods.

Browne added that the rent-to-own plan will also include a Clare Hall development. Housing Minister Maria Browne confirmed this.

The program helps residents who cannot get traditional mortgages. Rent payments count toward the purchase price of a unit.

Cabinet also canceled an old lease on 13.6 acres at Sutherlands. Families living there for years can now buy the land.

The land belonged to the late Maxwell Randolph Henry, but the government freed it for residents. Prices will start at $1 per square foot.

The Ministry of Housing and Works will develop the site. Plans include affordable housing, community spaces, and regularized settlements.

Browne said Sutherlands had sat unused for years, but now families will finally benefit.

Overall, the government is creating more chances for homeownership. Bolans, Barbuda, and Sutherlands residents can access better housing.

This expansion shows a strong push for affordable housing and community development. Citizens can now look forward to safer, modern homes.
