Antigua PM Cautious on US Military Action

Antigua & Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne responded on 4 September 2025 to U.S. military activity in the southern Caribbean—specifically, the destruction of an alleged drug boat linked to Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua cartel. Browne stated that while such action against drug traffickers cannot easily be condemned, any hint of escalation toward broader military intervention in the region would be unacceptable. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and regional peace, making clear his opposition to war or conflict that could destabilize the Caribbean.
This occurred against a backdrop of heightened tensions–U.S. forces have deployed an amphibious squadron, a nuclear submarine, destroyers, and reconnaissance aircraft in the area to target drug networks. In response, Venezuela has mobilized military forces, voicing concern over sovereignty and regional stability. PM Browne’s statement thus aligns with CARICOM’s long-standing vision of the Caribbean as a “Zone of Peace.”
