Antigua Monitoring Students in Cuba Amid Sanctions
Antigua is closely monitoring nationals studying in Cuba as US sanctions tighten. The government said it is tracking their welfare carefully. Officials noted that sanctions have strained Cuba’s economy. Therefore, concerns have grown about living conditions.
Last month, a group of Antiguan students in Havana spoke out on social media. They appealed to Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Ambassador George Goodwin. The students said they felt uncertain about safety measures. They also voiced concern about rising political tensions.
In response, Cabinet discussed the matter in detail. On Friday, Maurice Merchant briefed the media. He serves as Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister. He said Cabinet received a full update and continues to monitor developments.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister E. P. Chet Greene also addressed the issue. He told ministers that students wish to remain in Cuba. They want to complete their studies despite economic hardship.
At the same time, the government stressed regional cooperation. Officials said Antigua and Barbuda is working through Caribbean Community rather than acting alone. This approach allows for coordinated action if needed. In addition, safety protocols are already in place. These measures will guide any response should conditions worsen.
Furthermore, officials said communication lines remain open. They continue to engage with students and their families. The government emphasized that student welfare remains the top priority. However, it also respects the students’ desire to continue their education.
Although tensions persist, no immediate evacuation has been announced. Instead, authorities are reviewing the situation step by step. They said they will adjust plans if circumstances change.
For now, Antigua maintains a watchful stance. Officials pledged to keep families informed. Above all, they said they will safeguard nationals while supporting their academic goals.
