Antigua Leads First Open HIV Awareness Forum
Antigua and Barbuda will hold its first public HIV symposium on November 26. Health officials want to address the recent rise in HIV infections.
The AIDS Secretariat announced the event under the theme “Overcoming Disturbances, Transforming the AIDS Response.” It aims to educate the public, strengthen prevention strategies, and encourage testing. Earlier this year, the country recorded around 25 new HIV cases.
Dr. Maria Pereira, Clinical Care Coordinator, said the symposium will allow direct interaction with experts. “We’re going to talk with the public. They can ask any question, and we will answer,” she explained. This approach marks a shift from previous sessions that focused only on healthcare providers.
Officials noted the rise in cases after several years of decline. Dr. Pereira said unprotected sex is the main cause. She urged residents to get tested regularly. Testing is available daily at the AIDS Secretariat or through private providers. “The test takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It uses a simple pinprick,” she said. Residents can call 462-5975 to make an appointment.
The event will focus on young people, who are most at risk. Attendees will hear from leading public health practitioners. Experts will provide advice on prevention, treatment, and addressing stigma.
The symposium takes place at the Multipurpose Centre. Organizers expect students, community leaders, and residents to attend. They hope the event strengthens awareness and encourages community-wide safer practices.
Health authorities plan to use the symposium to create a proactive and inclusive approach. They aim to equip the public with knowledge and tools to reduce infections. Participants will also learn how to support those affected by HIV.
By combining education, engagement, and practical guidance, officials hope this first public symposium will spark long-term improvements in prevention and care across Antigua and Barbuda.
