Antigua Launches Major Plan to Remove Key Education Costs
Antigua announced significant changes that will reshape national education access. Moreover, Prime Minister Gaston Browne outlined new policies that remove major financial barriers for students. He said these measures will begin once key infrastructure work is completed.
Browne confirmed that the government will offer free tuition at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands campus. This applies to all Antiguan and Barbudan students pursuing first-degree programmes. Furthermore, he said this change will take effect when the large campus expansion finishes. He noted that the expansion remains an important national priority.
Additionally, the Prime Minister announced another major shift. Starting in 2026, the government will cover the cost of all CSEC examination fees. This support includes students in public schools. It also includes students in private schools. Therefore, families will no longer carry these exam expenses.
The Prime Minister also revealed that tuition fees at the Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies (ABCAS) will be removed. This policy will offer broader access to post-secondary education. Moreover, Browne said these decisions reflect the government’s commitment to national development.
Officials stated that the education measures form part of a wider plan. They said the objective is to strengthen human capital. They also said the policies align with long-term national priorities. Therefore, the government intends to move forward with each step as planned.
Furthermore, the announcements highlight the government’s focus on expanding opportunities. Browne emphasized the link between education and national progress. He said these changes will support students as they prepare for future careers. He also said the reforms show a focus on equity and advancement.
The UWI Five Islands expansion remains central to the overall strategy. Once finished, it will enable the full rollout of free first-degree tuition. Additionally, it will give students more programme options. It will also increase the campus’s ability to serve growing demand.
Parliament will review the policy framework in upcoming sessions. Lawmakers are expected to discuss timelines and implementation details. However, the government has signaled strong intent to proceed. Browne stressed that education reforms remain essential for national growth.
