Antigua Expands Visa-Free Travel for Citizens

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda is expanding visa-free and simplified travel access for its citizens. The move follows new visa agreements with countries in Africa and the Middle East, according to the government.

Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene announced the developments during the 2026 Budget Debate in Parliament. He said the agreements form part of a deliberate strategy to improve global mobility for Antiguans and Barbudans. At the same time, the policy aims to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.

Greene confirmed that new visa arrangements have been concluded with the United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Benin. As a result, citizens will find it easier to travel, conduct business, and build connections in these regions. Moreover, the agreements support growing engagement with emerging markets.

Although Greene did not detail the specific terms, he emphasized practical benefits. He said the agreements move foreign policy beyond symbolism and toward tangible outcomes. In particular, they are expected to support trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

In addition, Greene referenced Japan as part of Antigua and Barbuda’s wider diplomatic network. While no new visa agreement was announced, he noted that arrangements with Tokyo remain active. Consequently, long-standing ties with Japan continue to strengthen.

The visa announcements came amid broader changes to the country’s foreign service. During his budget presentation, Greene outlined adjustments to overseas missions and new diplomatic appointments. Furthermore, he highlighted efforts to expand Antigua and Barbuda’s international presence.

Government officials increasingly view visa access as a measure of diplomatic reach. For small island states, mobility plays a critical role in economic opportunity. Therefore, easier travel can support education, tourism, and trade development.

Greene said the latest agreements reflect the government’s belief that foreign policy should benefit everyday citizens. Rather than remaining limited to formal statements, diplomacy should deliver real advantages. These include easier travel, broader networks, and stronger international partnerships.

While Greene did not announce additional agreements, he signaled continued efforts. He said the government will pursue similar arrangements where possible. Ultimately, the strategy aims to position Antigua and Barbuda as a well-connected and outward-looking nation.
