Antigua Engages US After New Immigration Measure
Antigua and Barbuda has begun talks with the United States following a new immigration measure announced by President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, the government said it is actively engaging US authorities for clarity. The proclamation lists Antigua and Barbuda among countries facing full or partial US entry restrictions.
As a result, officials moved quickly to address the issue.
Ambassador to the United States Ronald Sanders confirmed that discussions are already under way. He said he has contacted the US State Department for details.
Specifically, Sanders seeks clarity on visa holders approved before December 31, 2025. He also wants a clear explanation for the decision.
According to Sanders, the main concern cited involves Antigua and Barbuda’s Citizenship by Investment Programme. The proclamation claims the programme operated without residency requirements.
However, Sanders said the government strongly disputes that claim.
“Our objective is full engagement with the US Government,” he said. “We want to restore visa access for our nationals.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed deep disappointment with the US decision. He said the proclamation does not reflect current law.
Importantly, Browne noted that the government has worked closely with US agencies over the past year. Those talks focused on strengthening safeguards within the investment programme.
Moreover, Browne said Antigua and Barbuda accepted US recommendations in good faith. The government also took concrete action.
Recently, Parliament passed sweeping new legislation. The law strengthens due diligence, transparency, and enforcement measures.
In addition, the legislation introduces a mandatory 30-day physical residency requirement. This rule now applies to all citizenship applicants.
Therefore, Browne said it is incorrect to claim the programme lacks residency rules.
He also revealed that US State Department officials expressed surprise at the proclamation. According to Browne, they received no advance notice of its release.
As discussions continue, Browne plans further diplomatic outreach. He will write directly to President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
In those letters, Browne will offer full cooperation. He will also request restoration of all visa categories.
At the same time, Browne stressed the importance of US-Antigua relations. He described the partnership as historic and deeply rooted.
The United States remains Antigua and Barbuda’s largest trading partner. It also enjoys a strong trade surplus with the country.
Ultimately, Browne said his government will protect that relationship. He pledged continued cooperation based on respect, trust, and accurate information.
