Antigua Emerges as Southern Caribbean Cruise Gateway

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda is emerging as a major cruise gateway in the region.
Specifically, the country now targets Southern Caribbean cruise traffic.

This new role follows the opening of a modern cruise terminal in St John’s.
The Antigua Cruise Port terminal opened on Lower Newgate Street.

During Saturday’s ceremony, industry leaders shared the outlook.
Notably, Global Ports Holding regional director Lancelot Arnold spoke.

According to Arnold, the terminal supports homeporting operations.
As a result, passengers can start and end cruises in Antigua.

Previously, Antigua served mainly as a port of call.
Now, however, its role continues to expand.

Arnold explained that turnaround operations are key.
They allow cruise lines to base ships in Antigua.

Therefore, the country now supports longer itineraries.
These routes extend into the Southern Caribbean.

In particular, Arnold mentioned destinations like St Lucia.
Other southern islands also benefit from the shift.

Moreover, this development strengthens regional connectivity.
It encourages cooperation among Caribbean destinations.

Arnold also highlighted the value of modern infrastructure.
He said strong ports build resilience and long-term growth.

Importantly, he credited close government collaboration.
That partnership, he said, made the project possible.

Meanwhile, Antigua Cruise Port general manager Gasper George also addressed guests.
He said the terminal was completed in under a year.

Furthermore, he confirmed progress on the wider Upland Development.
That project, he said, should finish by mid-year.

George described the opening as a turning point.
He said the cruise sector has entered a new phase.

Accordingly, destinations must adapt to change.
Larger ships now dominate cruise fleets.

At the same time, passenger expectations continue to rise.
Modern facilities are therefore essential.

George stressed the terminal improves passenger flow.
It also enhances the visitor experience.

Beyond that, he highlighted economic benefits.
Cruise tourism supports transport providers across the island.

It also boosts tour operators and local vendors.
Retailers and restaurants also benefit.

Additionally, hotels and service industries gain from increased traffic.
The impact spreads across communities.

George said cruise tourism supports jobs and investment.
It also strengthens small and medium businesses.

As cruise activity grows, opportunities will increase.
Officials expect wider economic returns.

Overall, the new terminal signals strategic progress.
It strengthens Antigua’s regional position.

Ultimately, the project boosts competitiveness.
It positions Antigua and Barbuda as a Southern Caribbean cruise gateway.
