Antigua and Barbuda To Acquire New Offshore Patrol Vessel, ABDF Chief Confirms

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda is pursuing the acquisition of a new offshore patrol vessel. The move aims to strengthen maritime security capabilities.

Firstly, Chief of Defence Staff Talbert Benjamin confirmed the plan during a national security press conference on Friday. He spoke in response to questions about regional security concerns.

Benjamin explained that the ABDF Coast Guard’s current fleet mainly consists of interceptor-class vessels. These vessels are designed for near-shore operations. However, he noted that the Defence Force needs a larger offshore patrol vessel. This vessel would allow extended surveillance and improved regional coordination.

Moreover, the ABDF has been consulting international partners. Discussions are ongoing with the United States, European shipbuilders, and shipbuilders in India. The goal is to determine the most suitable vessel for operational needs.

In addition, Benjamin emphasized that the new vessel must integrate with regional and international partners. Joint operations require compatibility and coordination. Therefore, the Defence Force is carefully evaluating options before making a final decision.

Meanwhile, the process of acquiring the ship remains ongoing. Benjamin stressed that no final selection has yet been made. The evaluation includes technical, operational, and partnership considerations.

Furthermore, the acquisition aligns with broader national security objectives. Strengthening maritime capabilities improves Antigua and Barbuda’s readiness. It also enhances the country’s ability to respond to regional threats.

Benjamin highlighted the importance of long-term planning. By securing an offshore patrol vessel, the ABDF can expand its operational range. Consequently, this will support both national defense and regional cooperation.

Additionally, the Chief of Defence Staff noted the strategic significance of the vessel. It is intended to complement existing resources while boosting overall maritime security.

Finally, Benjamin assured the public that updates will be provided as the process progresses. The Defence Force remains committed to transparency and careful planning.

Ultimately, Antigua and Barbuda’s pursuit of a new offshore patrol vessel demonstrates a proactive approach to national and regional security. The ABDF continues to work closely with international partners to ensure operational effectiveness.
