Antigua and Barbuda is moving to relax strict dress code rules in public offices. This decision follows reports that some people were turned away while seeking services.

Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant said Cabinet reviewed these concerns. He noted that current rules may be too rigid. As a result, some individuals could not complete official business.

“I have heard of instances where persons were turned back,” Merchant said. He explained that some people traveled to offices but were denied entry due to their clothing.

Therefore, the government now wants a more practical approach. Merchant said dress rules should not block access to services. Instead, policies should follow common sense rather than strict enforcement.

“Dress must not stop individuals from doing business with government,” he said. He added that flexibility is important in daily operations.

Moreover, the issue has affected people seeking key services. For example, some individuals could not complete voter registration due to attire concerns.

However, Merchant said standards of decency will remain in place. At the same time, access to services must come first.

“Policies must be practical, especially for vulnerable groups,” he said. He noted that some people may not have other clothing options.

Additionally, officials support flexibility in borderline cases. If attire raises concerns, staff can still assist individuals in alternative ways.

“For instance, officers can meet individuals in the foyer,” Merchant explained. This approach allows services to continue without strict denial of entry.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has not introduced formal new rules. Instead, agencies and managers will use discretion when applying guidelines.

Still, the government’s message remains clear. No one should lose access to services because of clothing.
