Antigua and Barbuda Join Commonwealth Day With Call for Unity

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda joined 56 nations across the Commonwealth to mark Commonwealth Day. The celebrations highlighted unity and shared prosperity.

The event focused on the theme, “Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth.” Officials said collective action is key to achieving national and regional growth.

Opening Ceremony

The observance began with a welcome address emphasizing cooperation. Speakers noted that prosperity cannot be achieved in isolation.

Performances followed from the St Joseph’s Academy Glee Club. Chaniel Imhoff, designer of the CHOGM logo, also shared remarks. Later, a pan performance added a cultural touch to the program.

Voices from Antigua and Barbuda

Kadeem Joseph, Political and Projects Officer at the British High Commission, delivered a poem celebrating Antigua and Barbuda’s voice in the wider Commonwealth.

“From a small island in the Caribbean, our voices travel farther than the tide,” Joseph said. He highlighted the importance of resilience and national character.

He added that greatness is measured not by a country’s size, but by its capacity to rise. Joseph encouraged young people to embrace opportunities for growth.

Message From the Commonwealth

Sir Clare Roberts, Governor General’s Deputy, read an address from King Charles III. The King emphasized the Commonwealth as a force for unity in a fragmented world.

“Our Commonwealth of Nations holds untapped potential for trade among trusting partners,” Sir Clare said. “Nearly two-thirds of our population is under thirty, giving the family energy and promise.”

He stressed that leaders meet for millions of citizens whose everyday acts of service, enterprise, and creativity drive shared progress.

Shared Responsibility

Speakers noted that the Commonwealth must pass on hope, ambition, and opportunity to future generations. They encouraged youth participation in service and innovation.

The day combined cultural performances, poetry, and official messages. Leaders and citizens alike reflected on the Commonwealth’s role in fostering collaboration.

Finally, Antigua and Barbuda’s participation reinforced the nation’s commitment to regional cooperation. The celebrations highlighted the importance of youth, service, and shared prosperity.
