Antigua and Barbuda Considers Tuition-Free Education at UWI
Antigua and Barbuda considers tuition-free education for nationals at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus. Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed that the government is reviewing the proposal.
The move comes as the government already covers a large portion of student costs through scholarships. Browne explained that since most students already receive financial support, making university tuition fully free would be a natural next step.
“Almost every person goes to UWI Five Islands, and the government provides a scholarship,” Browne said. “I am now speaking to my colleagues about literally making it free. Since we’re paying already anyway, we might as well make university education free.”
The proposal aligns with the administration’s commitment to expanding access to higher education. Browne emphasized that tuition-free education would promote long-term national growth and development.
“The goal is to provide opportunities for continued growth and development for each Antiguan and Barbudan,” he said. “We want residents to enjoy living standards that are second to none.”
Officials say the plan is still under review. If approved, the program could significantly reduce financial barriers for students pursuing higher education at UWI Five Islands. The government believes this step will strengthen workforce development and improve national competitiveness.
