Antigua and Barbuda Chairs Key UN Caribbean Committee

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda has assumed the chairmanship of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee for 2026 to 2028. The appointment marks a major leadership milestone for the country within the United Nations system.

The handover took place last week in Trinidad and Tobago during the 22nd meeting of the CDCC. Trinidad and Tobago formally transferred the chairmanship after completing its term.

The CDCC operates under the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. The body was established in 1975 to promote regional economic and social cooperation. Since then, it has played a central role in shaping Caribbean development policy.

Today, the committee focuses on the specific needs of Caribbean small island developing states. In particular, it addresses climate change, disaster resilience, and sustainable development financing. Additionally, it promotes deeper South-South cooperation across the region.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Walton Webson, attended the formal handover. He described the new role as both timely and strategic for the country.

According to Ambassador Webson, the chairmanship aligns closely with Antigua and Barbuda’s regional priorities. He noted that the role supports the ABAS decade as a framework for strengthening SIDS resilience. As a result, the country can help guide regional implementation efforts.

Moreover, Ambassador Webson said the position strengthens Antigua and Barbuda’s leadership credentials. It also supports the operational expansion of the SIDS Centre of Excellence. At the same time, it allows the country to deepen technical partnerships across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Webson outlined several key priorities for the term. These include building strong regional investment pipelines and advancing climate financing reform. He emphasized the importance of practical solutions for Caribbean states.

He also stressed the need for a fairer global financial system. According to him, predictability and resilience must guide a new financial architecture for island states. Therefore, the CDCC will continue strong advocacy on behalf of the region.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Webson expressed appreciation to Trinidad and Tobago. He praised its stewardship and commitment to Caribbean integration during its chairmanship.

Overall, Antigua and Barbuda’s leadership signals growing regional confidence. Consequently, the country now stands at the forefront of shaping Caribbean development policy.
