Antigua and Barbuda has appointed Jamaican dancehall artist Masicka as a cultural ambassador. This move supports youth development and expands the creative industries.

Director of Communications Maurice Merchant announced the decision during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing. He explained that Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene brought the proposal forward.

According to Merchant, the initiative aims to strengthen youth engagement and support artistic growth. In addition, it will deepen cultural ties within the region.

“The Cabinet approved the appointment of Jamaican recording artist Masicka,” Merchant said. He added that the role focuses on youth talent development and creative industry collaboration.

Furthermore, the programme forms part of a national strategy. This strategy aims to grow the creative sector and improve cultural diplomacy. It also seeks to create new opportunities for young people.

As part of the plan, three young Antiguan and Barbudan artists will join a Jamaica-based exchange programme. There, they will take part in studio sessions and songwriting development. They will also receive vocal coaching and performance training.

Additionally, participants will meet music producers and record labels. They will also learn about touring and the business side of music. Therefore, the programme offers both creative and professional exposure.

Moreover, the initiative includes a national youth music mentorship programme. It will also feature youth-focused forums led by Masicka. These forums will encourage discussion and creative growth.

Masicka, born Javaun Nicholas Fearon in Portmore, Jamaica, is a leading figure in modern dancehall. He is known for his lyrical style and storytelling. His projects 438 and Generation of Kings performed well on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.

Meanwhile, officials will soon select the three local artists for the exchange programme. After that, they will roll out the mentorship and forum activities.
