Ambassador Murdoch Hails OECS Accession to UN Anti-Torture Treaty
OECS member states celebrated their OECS accession to UN Anti-Torture Treaty, marking a historic milestone. St. Lucia’s recent joining completed the bloc’s full alignment under the UN Convention Against Torture (UNCAT).
H.E. Ambassador Colin Murdoch, the OECS Permanent Representative to the UN, said the accession shows strong regional unity on human rights. He added that the move reflects coordinated action and shared commitment across the OECS.
Moreover, Murdoch explained that the accession follows Article 15 of the Revised Treaty of Basseterre. This article guides foreign policy coordination among member states. Therefore, the accession strengthens the OECS’ regional strategy on international human rights issues.
In addition, Murdoch highlighted the support of the Convention Against Torture Initiative (CTI). The CTI provided technical advice, capacity building, and ongoing guidance. As a result, OECS members can implement UNCAT more efficiently and effectively.
Regional officials emphasized that partnerships remain key. They said working with CTI and other partners helps monitor compliance. Consequently, human rights protections across the OECS are expected to improve.
Furthermore, officials said the accession demonstrates the bloc’s commitment to multilateral engagement. By acting together, members amplify their voice in global forums. In addition, the move strengthens the OECS’ credibility in international diplomacy.
Looking ahead, the OECS will focus on full treaty implementation. Officials stressed that domestic laws and policies must align with UNCAT standards. They also pledged ongoing reporting and collaboration to track progress.
Overall, the OECS accession to UN Anti-Torture Treaty marks a major step for human rights in the Caribbean. It shows the bloc can act collectively, meet international obligations, and set an example for other regional organizations.
