All Saints Road Repairs Progress as Testing Advances

All Saints

All Saints Road is moving steadily toward long-awaited rehabilitation as testing, surveying, and early preparatory work are now underway. According to Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant, the project received renewed attention during this week’s Cabinet meeting, where officials confirmed that on-site work has officially begun. Merchant explained that a company—formed through a partnership between a Canadian engineering firm and a local counterpart—has already started carrying out technical assessments along the roadway. During Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing, he noted that residents and commuters may have already observed teams on the ground conducting surveys and cutting test patches to evaluate the structural conditions of the road. These tests are considered essential steps in determining the precise engineering requirements for the full rehabilitation phase.

The scope of the project extends far beyond resurfacing. As part of the comprehensive reconstruction effort, old APUA pipelines buried beneath sections of the road will be removed and replaced with modern infrastructure to ensure long-term durability and improved utility services. This coordinated approach will prevent the need for future excavation that often compromises newly paved roads. The planned rehabilitation will cover approximately 11 to 12 miles, stretching from the VC Bird bust in St. John’s all the way to English Harbour. Merchant emphasized that the intention is to deliver a road reconstruction effort that not only enhances driving conditions but also strengthens the essential underground systems that serve surrounding communities. With the preparatory work already in motion, engineers are assessing how best to stage construction activities while maintaining safe and manageable traffic flow.

As progress continues, motorists can expect planned traffic diversions designed to minimize inconvenience once heavy machinery and full construction crews are mobilized. Merchant assured the public that mobilization is imminent and that the government is committed to delivering tangible improvements to one of the nation’s most heavily traveled routes. “Very shortly, you will see mobilization and a transformation of the All Saints Road,” he said, highlighting the substantial impact the project is expected to have on transportation and infrastructure reliability. He also indicated that Cabinet will issue further updates next week as more details become finalized. With testing underway and coordination between government agencies and engineering teams increasing, the long-awaited overhaul of All Saints Road is finally transitioning from planning to visible action, signaling a significant step toward safer, smoother, and more resilient public infrastructure.
