All Airport Transport Must Be Approved by ABAA to Operate
New Rule Protects Passengers
All unauthorized vehicles for hire are now banned from collecting passengers at V.C. Bird International Airport. This rule, effective December 1, 2025, aims to protect passengers and ensure consumer safety. Moreover, it strengthens consumer confidence in airport transport.
Who the Ban Affects
Specifically, the ban applies to taxis, limousines, shuttles, and rental cars. However, friends, family, and business associates picking up known passengers are still allowed.
In addition, Airbnb hosts and other accommodation operators are not authorized to pick up guests. Therefore, only approved operators may collect passengers for hire.
Authorized Vehicles Only
All transportation services operating for hire must be approved by the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA). This ensures passenger safety, proper training, and adherence to fares. Meanwhile, passenger drop-offs remain permitted for all vehicles.
Hotels registered through the ABAA Fast Track Program can continue to collect arriving guests. In other words, safety rules apply only to commercial services.
Current Transport Network
Currently, V.C. Bird Airport has:
- 70 taxis
- 19 car rental agencies
- 9 tour operators
- 3 limousine companies
Together, these operators serve nearly 500,000 passengers annually. Additionally, a limited number of new permits may be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applying for Authorization
Interested applicants should contact Ms. Geneva George at gh.george@abairportauthority.com or 268-484-2303. Successful applicants must meet requirements including:
- Background checks
- Vehicle-condition standards
- Customer-service training
- Strict adherence to fares
Ensuring Passenger Safety
Finally, the ABAA emphasizes that these measures prioritize passenger safety and service quality. Consequently, only verified and trained operators may pick up passengers.
Passengers are advised to always use authorized services. Otherwise, they risk violating airport regulations and compromising safety.sportation services to avoid violations and ensure a safe experience.
