Airlines Cancel Flights to Venezuela After FAA Issues Security Warning
Airlines around the world are canceling flights to Venezuela after a new FAA warning about rising security risks. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration urged pilots to use extreme caution in Venezuelan airspace because of worsening instability and increased military activity.
Additionally, Marisela de Loaiza, president of the Airlines Association in Venezuela, confirmed that six major carriers have paused operations. These include TAP, LATAM, Avianca, Iberia, Gol, and Caribbean Airlines. She said all six suspended flights indefinitely. Moreover, Turkish Airlines announced a temporary suspension from November 24 to 28.
Meanwhile, Colombian President Gustavo Petro commented on the situation Sunday on X. He argued that regular flights should continue between Latin American countries. He also said that blocking travel harms people more than governments. According to Petro, limiting movement “is a crime against humanity.”
On Friday, the FAA issued a detailed warning. It said unspecified threats could endanger aircraft at all altitudes. The agency also warned that takeoffs, landings, and stationary aircraft could face risks. Because of this, airlines began reviewing routes and safety procedures immediately.
Furthermore, the warning comes during escalating tensions between the U.S. and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The Trump administration continues to reject Maduro’s legitimacy. It also accuses him of narcoterrorism and corruption. As a result, U.S. pressure on Venezuela has intensified in recent months.
For example, the U.S. military has flown bombers near the Venezuelan coast during training exercises. These drills reportedly simulate possible attack scenarios. In addition, the USS Gerald R. Ford and several destroyers arrived in the region. This deployment created the largest U.S. military presence in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela in decades.
The U.S. government has also targeted regional drug trafficking routes. Since early September, U.S. forces have carried out several strikes on small boats accused of smuggling. These operations, according to officials, have killed more than 80 people.
Consequently, the FAA warning has deepened concerns about regional stability. It also leaves Venezuela more isolated as airlines reconsider safety, logistics, and potential threats. For now, aviation experts expect more cancellations until conditions improve.
