AIDS Secretariat’s Teen Talk Seminar Draws Strong Praise for Impact

AIDS

AIDS Secretariat officials say their “Teen Talk Seminar: My Life, My Choices” was a major success, as the event brought together students from ten secondary schools across Antigua and Barbuda. The seminar formed part of the Secretariat’s 2025 World AIDS Day Week of Activities.

The initiative aimed to empower teenagers with practical knowledge and stronger decision-making skills. Additionally, it encouraged them to build confidence while navigating modern social pressures.

During the seminar, Minister of Health Sir Molwyn M. Joseph delivered a direct and motivating address. He urged students to use their personal willpower to stay away from risky behaviours. Moreover, he highlighted the importance of avoiding sexually transmitted infections and seeking advice from trusted, well-informed adults.

Furthermore, Sir Molwyn encouraged the AIDS Secretariat to continue offering youth-centered educational sessions throughout the year. He said consistent engagement can strengthen national prevention efforts and support healthier choices among young people.

The seminar also included inspiring presentations from Dr. Margarethe Belle, Loretta Benjamin, Joy-Ann Harrigan, and Nikisha Smith. In addition, CARICOM Youth Ambassador and Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador Janet Simon delivered special remarks that resonated strongly with participants.

Students explored several important topics designed to help them make informed life decisions. Specifically, they learned about Understanding STIs, Sex and the Teenager, HIV and the Human Body, Self-Esteem and Media Literacy, and Navigating Social Pressures. As a result, many participants left the event feeling more confident and better informed.

Meanwhile, organisers explained that the Teen Talk Seminar plays a key role in raising awareness ahead of World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day will be officially observed on Monday, December 1st.

Finally, the week of activities will conclude on Sunday with the Grand Red Ribbon Day and a Street Parade through St. John’s. The Secretariat says these events continue to bring communities together while promoting education, compassion, and prevention.
