ABWU President Kem Riley Wins Key Role in Regional Labour Leadership

ABWU

ABWU President Kem Riley has gained a major regional post, marking a proud moment for the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union. He was elected 3rd Vice-President of the Caribbean Congress of Labour during the organisation’s 22nd Triennial Delegates Conference in Trinidad and Tobago. His election strengthens Antigua and Barbuda’s voice in regional labour affairs and highlights the union’s growing influence.

Riley attended the conference with ABWU representatives Joshua Pigott and Chenise Lewis. The gathering brought together labour leaders from across the Caribbean. It focused on cooperation, worker protection, and modern labour strategies. Moreover, the conference theme — “One Caribbean, One Voice: Advancing Workers’ Rights through Governance and Solidarity” — underscored the region’s push for stronger unity.

Furthermore, Riley’s new role signals broader recognition of Antigua and Barbuda’s contributions to regional labour work. The ABWU has long argued that small states must maintain an active presence in these regional bodies. Therefore, the union views this election as a clear confirmation of its commitment to advocacy, governance, and worker representation.

During the conference, delegates examined issues shaping today’s labour landscape. They discussed wage pressures, job security, skills training, and the impact of new technologies. They also explored strategies to protect vulnerable workers in tourism economies. Additionally, leaders reviewed efforts to modernise industrial relations across the region.

Riley participated in several sessions and stressed the need for better regional coordination. He argued that Caribbean workers face similar challenges, so cooperation is essential. He also highlighted the importance of training programmes that prepare workers for a changing job market. His contributions, according to ABWU representatives, helped position Antigua and Barbuda as a thoughtful and strategic voice.

In Antigua and Barbuda, the ABWU welcomed the announcement with pride. Union members said the achievement reflects years of steady leadership and engagement. They also believe Riley’s post will open new doors for collaboration, research, and policy support.

As the conference continues, labour leaders aim to strengthen ties and shape new approaches for the next three years. With his election, Riley now joins the CCL’s executive team at a critical moment. The ABWU says it looks forward to the work ahead and to advancing the interests of workers across the region.
