ABLP launches ‘Renaissance’ campaign ahead of 2026 polls
Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) launched its 2026 campaign on Tuesday.
Firstly, the event took place at People’s Place on Nugent Avenue. The party unveiled its theme, “Renaissance: A New Era.”
Moreover, all 17 candidates were presented for the April 30 election. The Prime Minister used the theme across many policy areas.
In addition, he applied the message to wages, tourism, healthcare, and living standards. He framed the campaign as progress, not recovery.
However, the theme raises questions. Can a fourth-term government claim a renaissance? Or does the term suggest something deeper?
Previously, the party used different themes. In 2014, it said “Ready to Rebuild.”
Then, in 2018, the message was “Rebuilding Together.”
Later, in 2023, the focus shifted to the “Next Level.”
Therefore, the use of “renaissance” marks a shift in tone. Historically, the term means rebirth after decline.
Meanwhile, the ABLP has stayed in power since 2014. It won again in 2018 and held government in 2023.
However, that 2023 victory came by a narrow margin. Consequently, some argue the theme reflects a near loss.
Furthermore, the candidate lineup shows change within the party. Several new faces are replacing past representatives.
For example, Michael Joseph replaces Gail Christian in St. John’s Rural West.
In addition, Dr. Philmore Benjamin replaces Sir Molwyn Joseph in St. Mary’s North.
Michael Freeland now contests St. George after the party lost the seat in 2023.
Similarly, Kiz Johnson replaces Lennox Weston in St. Philip’s South.
Meanwhile, Dwayne George returns to contest St. Mary’s South.
Also, Kendra Beazer faces BPM’s Trevor Walker in Barbuda.
Randy Baltimore replaces Sir Robin Yearwood in St. Philip’s North.
Finally, Anthony Smith Jr. contests All Saints West after crossing from the UPP.
As a result, the party appears to be refreshing its lineup. This supports the idea of internal renewal.
However, the question remains. Is this national progress or party reinvention?
In conclusion, the “renaissance” theme may serve two purposes. It promotes continued development while signaling change within the party.
