Guyana police are investigating the discovery of 36 pounds of suspected cocaine that officers found concealed inside frozen fish in Richmondville, Providence, East Bank Demerara.

The Guyana Police Force said officers made the seizure on Sunday during an operation in the area. Police intercepted a motor vehicle driven by a 44-year-old miner, who was the vehicle’s only occupant.

Officers searched the vehicle and found two bags containing frozen fish in the trunk. During a closer examination, police reportedly discovered several parcels containing a white powdery substance concealed inside the fish.

Police recovered a total of 15 parcels from the frozen fish. Officers later weighed the suspected cocaine, which amounted to 36 pounds.

Police then took the suspected narcotics and the vehicle to the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officers also arrested the 44-year-old driver and took him to the Criminal Investigations Department. He remains in police custody while investigators continue their inquiries into the suspected drug seizure.

The discovery follows an operation by the Guyana Police Force targeting suspected illegal activity. Police have not provided further details about where the suspected cocaine came from or where it may have been headed.

Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the seizure and the role of the arrested man.
