CXC Launches CTEC After Strong Math Pilot Results
The Caribbean Examinations Council, CXC, has launched a new programme called the Caribbean Technical Education Certificate, or CTEC. The launch follows strong results from a Mathematics pilot.
CXC made the announcement during its official 2026 examination results ceremony in Anguilla. The new system aims to help more students succeed while keeping the same academic standards.
CXC Registrar Dr Wayne Wesley said the programme addresses poor results in subjects such as mathematics. Under the traditional system, students often depend on one final examination. If they do not pass, they may leave without formal proof of what they learned.
CTEC takes a different approach. It divides subjects into smaller and focused modules. Students can complete each module step by step. They can also receive recognition for the skills and knowledge they achieve along the way.
The Mathematics pilot included more than 2,500 students from 15 Caribbean territories. The programme also involved 42 centres across the region.
During the May-June 2026 examination session, 2,535 candidates sat CTEC Mathematics Module 1. CXC reported that 88 per cent earned acceptable grades. Only one candidate received the lowest grade.
CXC compared those results with the traditional Mathematics examination. The organisation said only about one in three candidates usually earns an acceptable grade in a typical sitting.
However, CXC stressed that one module does not equal a full subject. Students must complete every required module and meet the full standard before earning the complete qualification.
The new system may also help students whose education faces disruption. A student who leaves school may still have proof of the modules they completed. They can also return later and continue working towards the full qualification.
CXC said the new approach reflects how many young people learn today. Students often learn new skills in stages and at their own pace. The organisation believes this method can help students stay involved and build confidence.
The Mathematics pilot showed that students can perform well when they focus on smaller sections of the subject. CXC said the results support the wider use of modular assessment across the region.
The organisation believes CTEC can give more Caribbean students a clear path towards certification. It also allows them to show what they know as they move towards completing the full qualification.
