Court Gives Final Delay in Chantel Crump Case
Court has granted a final adjournment in the case involving the killing of nine-year-old Chantel Crump.
On Wednesday, a magistrate allowed prosecutors one last short extension. However, the court made it clear that this would be the final delay.
The case is against Angela Mejia. She faces charges in connection with Crump’s death.
During the hearing, Mejia’s attorney, Wendel Alexander, made a strong application. He asked the court to dismiss the matter. According to him, the delay amounts to a failure to prosecute.
Furthermore, Alexander argued that the long proceedings have harmed his client. He said intense public scrutiny has added pressure. As a result, he claimed Mejia has faced unfair treatment.
Despite these arguments, Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel rejected the request. She refused to throw out the case. Instead, she granted a final adjournment.
The court heard that the case file is now with the Director of Public Prosecutions. Therefore, prosecutors need additional time before moving forward.
Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the case remain deeply troubling. Crump’s body was found in the Weatherills area on March 15, 2025. The discovery came days after reports that a woman in a vehicle took her near her home.
Since her first court appearance, Mejia has remained on remand. She continues to stay in custody as the matter progresses.
Although the defence pushed for dismissal, the court chose to proceed. Now, attention turns to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The next steps will likely shape how quickly the case advances.
For now, the adjournment stands as the final extension granted by the court.
